Interview with Vanessa Hong

Hmmmm. Maybe a Celine piece I’ve waited for something special to wear to. Definitely want to make a splash to celebrate this when it’s all over.

I discovered Vanessa many years ago. Back then, no one used the term “influencer” and Vanessa ran her own blog names Haute Pursuit. Her website was a home to the inspiring outfits, New York City lifestyle and exquisite blogging skills. She is one of the few original fashion bloggers who created a new niche in the fashion industry and established new types of partnerships in it. She constantly collaborates with brands such as Chanel, Bottega Veneta and Prada and also hosts a podcast channel VanessaWantsToKnow.
Vanessa has served as an inspiration for my blogs in the past. Today I am happy to share our interview and introduce her firsthand. So let’s dive right in!

  1. Unfortunately, we are all going through a very difficult situation with COVID-19 and lockdowns all around the world. Could you share your personal experience, including the biggest challenges and/or tips?

It’s definitely been strange living in NY, one of the busiest cities in the world & have it be still and quiet except for sirens. The lockdown has really helped me see what is important to me in my personal and work life. Hopefully people have enjoyed all the IG Lives, IG TVs and feed content I’ve created during this time. It’s come from a place of curiosity, expansion and wanting to help in whatever way I can.

My yoga community has been so important during this time. I do class every day and have tried to be consistent with my meditation practice. Slowing down in general, spending less time on my phone and reading more books has also really nourished me.

  • Everyone following you can tell that along with the exquisite style you also bring spirituality and consciousness to the table. How well do you think the brands are responding to the challenges of sustainability of the planet?

To be honest, I want to be more optimistic about the industry as a whole, but sustainability and the fashion industry are ideologically, diametrically opposed. The onus on fashion brands is to create new seasons, make more clothes, add to what has been made already. I love fashion, I consume fashion myself and this is a realization that is very hard to stomach.

Hopefully one of the outcomes of this global event is a real, intentional review of how we do business in fashion.

  • Being an influencer you probably have a large wardrobe. With the items you have accumulated, (including the gifts from the brands) is there any method/rule you approach to keep your wardrobe mindful?

One of the ways I’ve tried to counteract this is not accepting gifts but rather working with brands on a sample loan basis. So this means I’ll borrow a piece from the runway or studio, shoot it, and then return the garments. When I am gifted (and this too happens) I give most of it away. When I started my career in fashion, I had limited funds and could not afford many of the things I wanted. So i know the value of receiving a gift, no strings attached – and I try to do this as often as possible.

  • What are your thoughts about vintage and second hand shopping? If positive, what are your favorite destinations online and offline?

For me, I like to collect old Celine pieces from Phoebe Philo’s era. I find those on Vestaire and The Real Real. Alternatively, I love going to vintage stores in Europe, i feel the curation and quality is so much better. One of my favorite people and stores is in Copenhagen, a placed called ‘Paloma’s vintage’

  • Is there an outfit or just an item you can’t wait to wear once this pandemic is over?

Hmmmm. Maybe a Celine piece I’ve waited for something special to wear to. Definitely want to make a splash to celebrate this when it’s all over.

  • Vanessa, can you share 3 influencers that inspire you?

my friend and a mentor @therealphilliplim (Phillip has the best cooking stories and his content is like a breath of fresh air just like him)

food stylist @lailacooks (I love Laila’s approach to food. It’s artistic, funny & very educational)

my facialist @joannaczechofficial (Joanna is one of the funniest people I know and she’s been doing faces for 20+ years and has so many great tips)

  • You created a great platform, especially for this particular situation. Is there anything additional project/idea you can share for our readers to look forward?

Yes, you can look forward to weekly podcasts from VanessaWantsToKnow. We’ll be having fun, uplifting conversations with all sorts of people from the Creative world. Definitely a must listen.

Luxury of Tank Tops Pt 2

A week ago I shared with you, my dear readers, my look showcasing few of this summer’s favorite trends, such as a basic tank top and strappy sandals. But since the most comfortable item of the season is not going anywhere I decided to expend this topic and bring even more styling and inspiration options from my favorite girls in the industry.

Being a great base for any outfit, dressing down a fancy statement items and adding an effortless edginess to the look are some of the reasons to love this trend. On the pictures above you can see how well the tank tops will work for your early Autumn looks in combination with various jackets. See more options on some chic styling and get inspired!

Luxury of a Tank Top

Summer heats up but we still want to make it fashion! This summer trends are all about comfort and the tank top is the most remarkable example of it. No difficulties matching the outfits, no worries about the temperature and you are dressed according to the latest fashion.

I wore this look few times this summer and felt great every time. The top I’m wearing is from H&M Studio SS19 collection which is no longer available (unfortunately), but there are so many great alternatives, such as this and this, or check more affordable ones here and here.

Thanks for checking in! And stay alert as the part two of the “Luxury of Tank Tops” is coming with some of my favorite influencers rocking this trend!

5-Product Summer Makeup Look

Dear friends, here we are! Long awaited summer days, with everything light and bright, have finally arrived. While we get some natural advantages, such as Sun-kisses skin, there is also the heat part that might get really uncomfortable sometimes. And just like we adjust our wardrobes, I believe the makeup routine needs to be adjusted as well.

Regardless of the season I usually opt for the makeup that looks natural and depending on the mood focus on lips or a settle eye. However, when the temperature gets high the light-weight-feeling of makeup becomes just as important as the visual. Therefore, I decided to share 5 of my favorite products for this season and a total everyday look I pull off using only these products.

This Estee Lauder CC cream is probably one of my favorite products of ALL seasons. But the reason I recommend it in summer is because of it’s light feeling. I totally replace any foundation with this cream and while it doesn’t have a strong coverage, it evens out the color on the entire face and with the summer tan it is all I really need. This CC cream gives your skin a natural, healthy glow and even tone which last long hours and contains SPF15 to protect your skin. I feel my skin breath and glow at the same time!

When it comes to brows this tiny Givenchy guy is always by my side. I don’t use pencils or shadows to fill in my brows so this one product does it all for me. It is a brush with tinted gel (I use N1 Brunette), which gives brows the shape and fills in the emptiness with tint. This product is waterproof which is great for summer! Easy and effective – is how I would describe it.

I rarely go for a dramatic eye in Summer but if you are this eye pencil is definitely a keeper. I use this perfectly waterproof black pencil on my lush-line. I try to make as this and invisible as possible but the whole purpose is the casually definition of my eye shape and visual thickness of lushes. If you are looking for a good quality pencil this is the one I recommend. It applies very softly, easily, is water proof and comes with YSL customized sharpener, which is always handy!

Then I move on to my lashes. Here I use this Diorshow waterproof mascara. I also use it in black and love it for the volume effect. To me this is a very simple, great quality mascara, which wouldn’t move from lashes and is always handy to have in bag!

And last but not least is this baby! There so many great things to say about this duo stick! Firstly, it comes in 2 colors (see options here) and you can use both colors multiple ways. In this look I only used the red side as a lipstick but you can also use it as a blush and I even used it as a pink “wet” eyeshadow. It’s just a great product to have in bag to quickly change your look and add a little extra detail to your makeup. Never the less, I show say how moisturizing is this stick, like a balm.

As you can see all these products are summer-approved, either for their waterproof features, or lightness and brightness. I chose to focus on these 5 products as they complete the simply makeup look, when you are rushing out for a long day and I don’t need any extra brushes or applicators which makes the process super fast and simple!

ZEBRA: Fashion’s New Favorite Animal

It’s been over a year since animal prints took over the fashion world. Leopards, sneaks and now zebras! In my opinion these prints are fun and playful so it didn’t take me long to jump into this trend.

Zebra top in my look is actually a swimsuit, which I can’t wait to wear this summer. It’s from H&M Studio SS19 collection. I love that this print is never boring (even when you pair it with all black, like me)!

I really enjoyed wearing this outfit. I felt confident and fashion-forward at the same time. However, I also have my eyes on some other gorgeous zebra prints. Love to share them with you.

Outfit Chronicles

Here in Tbilisi, we love to complain about the weather. Especially in March, when the wind is blowing and mixing our Spring-ish vibes with gloomy clouds. Even though I wasn’t feeling like leaving my comfort zone, I still managed to pull off an easy, trendy, comfortable outfit I will be seen wearing during (real) Spring a lot.

TIPS
Combine a breezy, silky skirt of your favorite color or print with a chunky, oversized or sporty sweater. You can find a broad verity of the silky skirt at affordable brands, such as H&M (this skirt), Zara, Mango and others. This look can totally work with sneakers as well but I feel like these sandals add something extra to the look and go perfectly with the skirt. Be open to experiment!

Hope you enjoyed this quick post. I’m looking forward to the warmer days but before that stay tuned for more!

Kazbegi Getaway

It’s hard to realize how much stress is on your shoulders until it’s gone. I left for a long weekend getaway to Kazbegi mountains (in Georgia), which turned out to be the most calming and stress-free place I have ever been to. Finding peace was not the purpose of the trip but a generous bonus. I left for Tbilisi on the 3rd day being totally in peace with myself; Calm, stress-free and full of positive thought.

Set Tako Free
Hungry

We stayed at the Rooms Hotel – cozy and comfortable place surrounded with the most breathtaking views (which were covered in snow that weekend). As I am far from being a good photographer I could hardly capture all the beauty and atmosphere, however, I can share a feeling:
On a late evening I found myself alone at the swimming pool. I was in the water looking through the windows, seeing silhouettes of enormous mountains and light of the Gergeti church on the top of one of the hills. Gentle light at the pool, smell of wood and this view felt absolutely surreal. This wasn’t a moment worth capturing for me but it was worth stopping, appreciating and remembering.

Of course, the hotel has some other perk, such as an amazing breakfast including champaign and sweetest staff.. but that’s all just details 🙂

Thanks for catching up. Wish you all the weekends full of fun and relaxation!

Outfit Of The Week

IMG_6102

It was a sunny morning, so I thought why not use the perfect chance to dress in my favorite cycling short. Never the less, I wanted to walk out my dream shoes (since last spring, when Celine showcased them on PFW).
Even though I wore this look to work, I think it is a perfect day-to-night outfit. While heels and blazer make it dressy and professional, this shorts keep it all comfy!

newwww

Obviously, I couldn’t help but add some golden details. Works perfectly with the beige accents on shoes. I’ve really been into belts over blazers, recently. I guess this is partly an influence after the last Dior show, where feminine silhouettes and highlighted waistlines were celebrated to the fullest. And talking about PFW- while I absolutely loved shows like, Isabel Marant, YSL, Jacquemus and Chloe, I would say that Celine’s previous collections (and again, my new shoes, which I am so grateful about) looked more appealing to my eye than the collection by Hedi Slimane. I see this as a different esthetic, which is simply not my personal preference.

Pearls, Pearls, Pearls…

Formula: your casual outfit+ pearl accessoryinspo

September brought New York Fashion Week, which brought all the trends that are here for at least the entire upcoming season. I’m starting with the simplest trend that is both, easy and effective. Take your perfect pearl accessory and just add it to the simple everyday outfit before running out. Whether you are going for a simple T-shirt and jeans, or a ruffled dress, there is no way to go wrong.

In my opinion, this time there are no rules. You can go over the top, think outside the box, or simply add a simple pearl to the classic look. Anyways, it will turn out just on point!IMG_5267

Perfect trend to borrow from our mothers and grand mothers, right? I agree, but I also added some new peaces like this pearl hoop earrings from Anouki. This was love from the first sight, I couldn’t resist.

Here is a little bonus. I created a personal selection of all my favorite pearl accessories. Each and every piece is available, hope you will find it useful.

Paris

IMG_1626They say “third time, a charm” and this time Paris was as charming and breathtaking as when we first met. There are lots of places, cities and countries that I plan to visit, however, this city pops up in my head over and over again. And, since Paris is always a good idea I followed my instinct and went back to the city of all my favorite things.

My birthday-vacation with my Mom was exactly what the doctor ordered. Super refreshing and inspiring. From drinking Moet in front of the Eiffel Tour to dinning with the view of Paris on top of the Pompidou Center, we did all the things cliché. And while I have done all the major sightseeing and touristic-destination-visiting on trip N1 and N2, this time was all about enjoying the city. (For example, if, on the first visit I spent 40 min in a queue at the Louvre to see Mona Lisa, this time we stopped by at 9 pm to have a cup of tea in the restaurant inside the Louvre with the view.)

We got really lucky with the apartment as well. I booked this studio apartment in the center of Paris from AirBnb, so, location and interior obviously was not a surprise. However, we discovered the entire place to be filled with fashion books. All the best ones! Every single great designer, photographer.. you name.. their books were in the room. My goal has always been to have a decent collection of this inspiration sources.. at least half of what our host had! 4362554A-C99B-47C3-A225-C89542CA0ACC

One of the highlights of the trip was Yves Saint Laurent museum. From mannequins dressed in Gorgeous handmade pieces to the room where he did his work, the whole experience was quite impressive!IMG_1179IMG_1167IMG_1165

Walking, exploring and tasting whats new was also part of the trip. Making this blogpost brought the best memories in me and while you will scroll through the rest of the pictures, I will hope to get back to the city of my heart sooner than planned.
